Optimist Learn to Sail and Red/White/Blue Racing (7 Weeks)

Opti's are divided into two classes: Opti Green (Beginners) / Learn to Sail, and Opti Red/White/Blue fleets.
Opti Green is for the beginner sailor or one with some individual singlehanded sailing experience.
In Opti Green/ Learn to Sail, sailors learn and practice basic sailing and boat handling skills. These will then be applied as the season progresses toward racing techniques such as a timed start, sailing upwind/downwind, and some general rules. Opti Green sailors are able to participate fully in DRYA Junior Regattas and are encouraged to do so.
Students will be moved out of Green fleet into Opti R/W/B as they advance at the discretion of the coaches.
Students are encouraged to provide their own Opti as they advance, but the club owns a fleet of beginner boats to start out.
Opti Red/White/Blue Racing (R/W/B) is a full-day class for our more advanced Opti sailors. Generally, sailors in Opti R/W/B Racing have completed one season in Opti Green Racing, or have the maturity and skill set to race and practice at a higher level.
The focus of this class is on single handed racing. Techniques learned in Opti R/W/B are ongoing and include but are not limited to, upwind/downwind body placement, speed performance, more advanced boat handling, sail trim, a variety of starting techniques, mark rounding rules and tactics, wind shifts, and US Sailing Rules of Racing as they apply to specific sailing situations.
Daily practice will focus on boat handling, muscle memory & conditioning, starts, mark roundings, and short races. On-land chalk talk (debriefing) and Opti boat maintenance for racing are also part of the program.
Opti R/W/B Racing sailors participate fully in DRYA Junior Regattas.
It is encouraged to provide your own boat and equipment at this stage, however, we do have a limited number of club boats available for R/W/B racers.
