Learn to Sail 420's and Racing 420's/Laser's (7 Weeks)

Learn to Sail and Racing 420's.
420 sailboats are two-person dinghies consisting of one skipper and one crew. The classes are divided into two groups: Learn to Sail and Racing. Learn to Sail will cover basic sailing and boat handling with the intention to complete some simple races by the end. This will build on any skills and prepare students to advance further into the racing program.
Learn to Sail 420's is a full-day class for slightly older (10yrs+) or bigger kids than Opti Learn to Sail, who are generally new to sailing or racing. This class uses CSYC-owned 420 sailboats without spinnakers or trapping.
In this class, basic sailing skills once learned are integrated into a racing environment, with sailors learning techniques such as timed starts, upwind/downwind sailing, sailboat handling, jib and main sail trim, mark roundings, and some racing tactics.
Because the age group of this class is generally older, this class tends to move at a faster pace than Opti Learn to Sail.
Sailors are encouraged to participate in the DRYA Junior Regattas held through the season.
420 Racing is a full-day class for our doublehanded 420 sailors. Generally, sailors in 420 Racing have completed several seasons in Opti R/W/B Racing or have some past experience sailing.
The focus of this class is on racing as well as high school/college sailing preparation. Techniques learned in 420 Racing are ongoing and include, but are not limited to, upwind/downwind body placement, sail trim, speed performance, precision boat and sail handling, advanced starting techniques, mark rounding rules and tactics, wind shift tactics, and US Sailing Rules of Racing as they apply to specific sailing situations.
Daily practice focuses on boat handling, muscle memory, starts, mark roundings, trap and spinnaker work, and short and long races. On-land chalk talk (debriefing) and 420 boat maintenance for racing are also part of the program. Once ready sailors will plan to learn and use the spinnaker and trap.
Spinnaker 420 Racing sailors participate in DRYA Junior Regattas.
