The Sewing Labs

Join us for a collaborative workshop between The Sewing Labs and Magpie Creative Reuse Collective, where creativity meets sustainability! This hands-on class is all about transforming thrifted, preloved, or secondhand textiles into a one-of-a-kind hoodie.

Bring your own textiles from home, something from your local thrift store, or Karen will have extra options of thrifted goodies for you to purchase for $10-20.  

For the workshop, Karen will supply:

1. 1. An oversized hoodie pattern in sizes S-2XL.
   2. Extra fabric/textiles for purchase ($10-$11) if you need.
   3. Energy!  She will be well caffeinated!
   4. Step by step sew-along instruction.
   5. Snacks of course!

What to keep in mind when choosing your textile:

1. 1. Thickness- your sewing machine will need to make it through 3 layers.
   2. I suggest you not use a cherished textile for your first hoodie!  You might make some mistakes- so let’s learn using a textile that is not so loved!

What you will need to supply and knowledge required:

1. 1. A sewing machine that you are familiar with operating and that you are fairly certain can get through 3 layers of the textile you have chosen.  The Sewing Labs has machines available if you do not have one.  Please let them know if you will need to borrow one when you sign up.
   2. This is a perfect first time garment to sew, but a basic knowledge of a sewing machine is needed.
   3. Pins, fabric scissors, tape measure, thread.

**Thursday April 10, Optional Thrift Store field trip held in Shawnee, KS 5:00-7:00pm

There will be an optional thrift store field trip held in Shawnee, Kansas on Thursday evening February 10th.  Everyone always has a fun time at this field trip!  We will learn what to look for when using upcycled textiles and maybe you will find something you will want to use for your project on Saturday!  This is also a great time to ask Karen any questions you might have prior to the workshop.
