You’ll learn about the constellations, the celestial sphere, early studies of the solar system, and the development of the heliocentric model of the universe. This semester we will use a highly rated Great Course entitled “Understanding the Universe – An Introduction to Astronomy” taught by Dr Alex Filippenko, a professor of Astronomy at the University of California, Berkley. Dr. Filippenko's research accomplishments, documented in more than 500 scientific publications and 600 abstracts and astronomical circulars, are among the most highly cited in the world. As time permits, we will use additional videos and discussion to go further in depth into selected topics of specific interest to the class.
