Long Weekend at the Christian Mountain Centre near Harlech
Following the success of the event at CMC Adventure in November 2024, a number of participants asked for a repeat event at CMC in the summer. In November, we offered an adventure activity day as well as walking. However, only walking took place but hopefully in summer we can take advantage of CMC activities offered to a minimum of 12 participants per activity in any session. See below for a list of activities available.
We hope that these activities will be attractive to younger members of the Club and that there will be sufficient interest. All participants who only want to walk should not be discouraged from attending.
CMC Adventure (https://cmcadventure.org.uk/) - also known as the Christian Mountain Centre, is based near Llanbedr on the North Wales Coast between Barmouth and Harlech. This area is one of the few places in England & Wales where there is a spectacular coastline with beautiful sandy beaches as well as rugged mountains within easy reach.
The accommodation at Bryn-y-Moel is a purpose-built development with 50 beds (in 11 small en-suite dormitories for up to 6 people). Unless the weekend is very popular, it is likely that only 2 or 3 people will be sharing each dormitory. There is ample on-site car parking, but it would be preferable to maximise car sharing. Public transport is a good option as there is a railway station at Pensarn (Gwynedd). NB: not Abergele and Pensarn! It should be possible to arrange lifts from the station to assist with luggage as Bryn-y-Moel is ¾ mile uphill. Through trains run from Birmingham New Street and International, and split ticketing for the whole journey is recommended as it can reduce the cost. The sections of the journey on the Cambrian Line from Shrewsbury to Dovey Junction and on the Cambrian Coast Line from Dovey Junction to Pensarn provide the most scenic railway journey in Wales.
The price of £174.00 per person will include full board accommodation for 3 nights (Friday, Saturday and Sunday), including self-prepared packed lunches.
To everyone attending the weekend, CMC Adventure will offer one Activity Day (morning and afternoon activity sessions), subject to there being a minimum of 12 people participating in each activity. These are not included in the above price and there will be an extra charge of £43.00 per person for a full day (2 activity sessions) or £28.00 per person for a half day (1 activity session). At this stage we will only collect the £217.00 for full-board accommodation, but please indicate whether or not you want take part in the activities by answering the question about this on the booking form.
The following activities could be offered by CMC Adventure (but the number of activties that can be offered will depend on the number of people who are interested):
• Kayaking (wetsuits provided)
• Open Canoeing (wetsuits provided)
• Gorge Walking (wetsuits provided)
• Rock Climbing (helmets and harnesses provided)
We hope to also offer some evening swimming in the sea at nearby Llandanwg Beach.
Hard walks in the Rhinogydd mountains will be organised on Saturday, Sunday and Monday. These mountains are probably the wildest and most rugged mountains in Wales. A full day walk on Monday will be available but some participants may need to finish the weekend earlier to avoid an evening drive home on Monday. Anyone who prefers easier walks can explore stretches of the Wales Coast Path, but probably without a qualified walk leader. The Coast Path is very easy to navigate and can be accessed from Pensarn Harbour, which is CMC Adventure’s other property and is directly accessible from Pensarn station.
You can also make the long weekend a day longer and even more worthwhile by taking part in a Regional Day Event near Bala organised by Stella Shaw, climbing Arenig Fawr (854m) from Bala on Friday 29 August. See the CWC Event List for details and contact Stella for more information about the walk and for accommodation on Thursday night, if you need it.
