Shining Cliff and Belper, Derbyshire - Public Walk

Shining Cliff and Belper Public Walk

9 miles, 1000 ft climbing

A lovely walk done as part of a weekend at Shining Cliff hostel last year.

Park near Ambergate on Holly Lane. Holly Lane is a narrow lane leaving the A6 on the West side between the garage and the A610 junction. Cross the river Derwent then immediately on the left there is a big layby as the road starts going up the hill.

Meet 9:45 for a 10 am start. Anticipate the walk taking around 6 hours.

Shining Cliff woods, then across the fields to pick up the Midshires Way. This takes us down the ridge to Blackbrook and into Belper in time for our lunch in the River Gardens. While in Belper we hope to have time to explore this historic town- the area of the historic mills then where the mill workers lived in Long Row. We might also see a nail maker’s cottage- an industry pre-dating the cotton mills.

Return is via the Derwent Heritage Way, initially along Wyver Lane before joining another lane back to Ambergate.

Please note: Saturday's forecast to be very hot. Please bring plenty of water and sun block. I can shorten the walk in the hot afternoon by return from Belper to Ambergate by bus or train.

Although bookings close the night before the event, it would be useful to know who's coming at least a few days beforehand (appreciate you might want the weather forecast to be available for the weekend).
