A three-day masterclass in expressive color, composition, and stitched storytelling

Join internationally acclaimed artist Hollis Chatelain for an extraordinary workshop that merges painting, color, and quilting into one cohesive creative process. Through her unique dye painting technique, Hollis teaches how to transform your own imagery — from sketches or photographs — into vibrant, painterly textiles that come alive through thread and stitch.

You’ll begin by learning to dye paint on cotton fabric using fiber-reactive dyes, exploring color layering, blending, and value control. Then, you’ll move into the quilting phase, where line, movement, and texture give your painted image depth, emotion, and energy.

Hollis’s teaching style emphasizes confidence, precision, and expression. She will guide you step-by-step through her process while encouraging each artist’s individual voice to shine.

Workshop Flow

Day 1 – Design & Dye Painting
• Introduction to materials and image transfer
• Dye painting fundamentals: mixing, layering, and blending color
• Creating dimensionality and depth through value and contrast

Day 2 – Finishing the Painting & Preparing for Stitching
• Setting dyes, refining imagery, and compositional balance
• Preparing the piece for quilting and thread sketching

Day 3 – Stitching as Expression
• Free-motion quilting and threadwork to enhance form and texture
• Adding highlights, shadow, and narrative through stitch
• Group critique and discussion of process and presentation

Studio Environment
Create in Aya’s spacious, light-filled coastal studio in Stuart, Florida — designed for focus, flow, and inspiration. Each participant enjoys ample workspace (no more than two per 4′×8′ table), power, USB access, and dye and sewing facilities.

Enjoy morning coffee, tea, and pastries, personalized lunch pickups from favorite local cafés, and the camaraderie of a creative community by the sea.
