Fall Into Reading Annual Conference

Join us for our third annual Fall in Literacy conference!

This conference is aimed for educators, learning resource educators, speech language pathologists, literacy coordinators, reading specialists, families and anyone else who works and supports children with their literacy development. Join us as we dive and explore areas of early literacy intervention, adapted literacy, assessments and the latest knowledge in the areas of literacy development, reading and writing with structured literacy.

This year we have Andrea Fraser joining us to look deeper at the term "science of reading", its influence on curricula and assessment as well as look at universal screening measures to understand how they contribute to a comprehensive assessment system, align with reading development, support a preventive model, and provide reliable data on the health of our educational systems as it relates to ensuring all children learn to read.

Day two we will have four break out sessions, providing attendees choose one in the morning and one in the afternoon.

What is Reading Comprehension?

Reading comprehension is not a skill that someone can learn and then apply in different contexts. It is one of the most complex activities that we engage in on a regular basis, and our ability to comprehend is dependent on a wide range of knowledge and skills. In this breakout session we will explore the misconception that reading comprehension is a skill, the various factors that contribute to reading comprehension and how we can support reading comprehension for our students.

Adapted Literacy: What do I need to know and consider?

With strong support and instruction, our belief is literacy is a goal for all our students. for AAC users, mastering literacy isn’t an option. It is a necessity. It enables AAC users to share ideas, stories, and information in diverse ways – empowering them to connect with others on a deeper level. Literacy is a medium which stories are shared, emotions are expressed, and knowledge is transferred. In this breakout session we will go over factors to consider when beginning the literacy journey with our students, different supports and strategies we can implement, and more.

Building Skilled Writers In The Classroom: How to evaluate writing programs through a structured literacy lens

This presentation will guide educators in understanding what truly makes a spelling and writing program effective. Participants will learn what to look for when evaluating programs, including alignment with structured literacy principles, integration of phonics and spelling rules, opportunities for meaningful writing, and strategies that support both struggling and advanced learners. With practical examples and comparison points, this session will equip teachers with the knowledge to confidently choose and implement programs that build strong, lasting literacy skills.
