[ONLINE] Elementary Debate (4th-5th)
What they will learn: In this dynamic course, young debaters will learn to express opinions clearly, support their ideas with evidence, and consider multiple perspectives. Students will practice organizing their thoughts, speaking with confidence, and staying calm under pressure. They’ll also explore essential debate skills including case building, research strategies, note-taking (flowing), and persuasive argumentation.
How it applies to the real world: Debate builds essential life skills such as: critical thinking, active listening, teamwork, and public speaking that students will use in everyday conversations, classroom discussions, and future leadership roles.
Deliverable: Depending on enrollment, students will participate in either Public Forum or Congressional-style debate. By the end of the course, students will have the opportunity to compete and will also take part in a live debate, demonstrating their ability to think quickly, speak persuasively, and respond respectfully to opposing viewpoints.
