Yorkshire Wolds
Explore the Yorkshire Wolds with this 6 night event staying in luxury self catering accommodation
The Yorkshire Wolds are the most northerly area of chalk landscape in England. Consideration is currently being given to designating them as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). The Wolds have their own distinctive character with open countryside on top of the Wolds but with steep dry valleys which wind around. There are also pretty villages scattered around. Some of David Hockney’s paintings feature Wolds landscapes. As far as I am aware this is only the second club event to have been held in East Yorkshire. Many club members will have been on events in The Dales and so this is an opportunity to explore a different part of Yorkshire.
Kipling House Barn was converted into high standard self- catering accommodation about 5 years ago. It is located on top of the Wolds near the small village of Middleton on the Wolds. In addition to the kitchen and large dining area on the ground floor there is a lounge on the first floor with excellent views southwards. We will do our own breakfasts and lunches but cater communally for evening meals. There is off road parking at the barn. On the last night, I suggest we eat out at a local pub (optional) which does traditional pub food at a reasonable price.
I plan to offer two walks most days graded as moderate or easy. Both will be walking in the same type of countryside and will usually be in the same area but the moderate walks will be longer and taken at a faster pace. In particular the easier walks will take any gradients more leisurely. We will be walking on paths / tracks sometimes through fields and sometimes on quiet roads. There is also a disused railway line which we might use. I have it in mind to do a coastal walk one day at Flamborough Head (followed by fish and chips in Bridlington). A number of longer trails cross The Wolds including the Wolds Way and the Minster Way.
For those who want some time off from walking to do sightseeing or want to spend additional time in East Yorkshire after the event there is plenty to see and do. A few examples include Burnby Gardens at Pocklington, Sledmere House, Burton Agnes (NT).The local historic county town is Beverley, York is only 25 miles away and Hull with The Deep sealife centre and Wilberforce heritage 18 miles.
Bookings open on 5th Jan. Book asap to be sure of a place, closing date for bookings 30th June. Kipling House Barn has 8 bedrooms which are all en-suite. Most are twin but one is a triple. Two rooms have double beds and so would be suitable for couples, otherwise they could be used for single occupancy. To reflect differences in the accommodation available and to cater for people’s desire to strike the right balance between comfort and budget, the cost will be at three prices £270, £330 and £360. Deposit £150 payable in full by 31st May. Depending on numbers there may be an additional charge for communal food.
