The Hazardous Materials Technician course prepares Operations-level responders for Technician-level hazardous materials response. This 40-hour course, based on NFPA® 470: Standard for Hazardous Materials/Weapons of Mass Destruction for Responders as well as NFPA® 1072 and NFPA® 472, provides participants with advanced HAZMAT-specific response knowledge and skills, enabling them to respond safely and effectively to incidents at the Technician level. Participants receive hands-on training in donning and doffing Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Levels A and B, containing leaks and drum over-packing, mitigating leaks in pressurized containers, and performing technical and mass decontamination. This course meets or exceeds OSHA 29 CFR 1910.120(q).

Prerequisite:

MUST HAVE COMPLETED HAZARDOUS MATERIALS OPERATIONS COURSE

  • Proof of completion must be submitted at registration.
  • Medical evaluation in accordance with 29 CFR 1910.134 (Respiratory Protection Standard). Each student must provide a supervisor’s letter or medical certificate verifying clearance to wear respiratory protection.
  • Capable of lifting up to 50 pounds (OSHA standard).
  • Capable of standing/walking for extended periods.
  • Capable of donning, operating in, and doffing PPE (including respirators and encapsulating suits).
  • Capable of operating in confined spaces.
  • Capable of climbing stairs/ladders while wearing PPE and SCBA.
Required Equipment:
  • All required PPE will be provided.
  • Medical monitoring will be conducted prior to training field activities. Blood pressure must be below NFPA 1582 Stage 2 Hypertension levels (systolic ≥160 mm Hg or diastolic ≥100 mm Hg). Students not meeting this requirement will not be allowed to participate in required field activities.
  • Students may bring their own work gloves if desired.
Course Fee: FREE for Louisiana and Federal First Responders
Dress Code: Long pants, closed-toe shoes, and short- or long-sleeve shirts are required. At the instructor’s discretion, shorts may be permitted during certain practical exercises.

Directions: Directions to the classroom will be provided in your confirmation email.
Lodging: Lodging will be provided at either the Joint Emergency Services Training Center (JESTC) Staff Development Center or the LSP Training Academy in Baton Rouge, at no cost for students residing more than 50 miles from the training site.
Meals: Due to JESTC’s remote location, lunch is provided for all students. Breakfast is also provided for students staying on-site.
Note: Evening meals are the responsibility of the student.
