40-Hour HazMat Advanced Technician Course – January 12–16, 2026

The Advanced Hazardous Materials Technician course prepares Technician-level responders for advanced hazardous materials response. This 40-hour course, based on NFPA® 470: Standard for Hazardous Materials/Weapons of Mass Destruction for Responders, as well as NFPA® 1072 and 472, provides essential knowledge, skills, and abilities to operate offensively or defensively at incidents involving hazardous materials. Course objectives include: HazMat chemistry; classification, identification, and verification of known and unknown materials using field survey instruments; and advanced control, containment, and confinement operations within available resources and PPE. Specialized mitigation techniques for railway tank cars and highway cargo tanks are also covered. This course meets or exceeds OSHA 29 CFR 1910.120(q)(6)(iii).

Prerequisite:

MUST HAVE COMPLETED HAZARDOUS MATERIALS TECHNICIAN (40 HOURS) COURSE

  • Proof of completion must be submitted at registration.
  • Medical evaluation in accordance with 29 CFR 1910.134 (Respiratory Protection Standard). Students must provide a supervisor’s letter or medical certificate verifying clearance to wear respiratory protection.
  • Capable of lifting up to 50 pounds.
  • Capable of standing/walking for prolonged periods.
  • Capable of donning, operating in, and doffing PPE, including respirators and encapsulating suits.
  • Capable of operating in confined spaces.
  • Capable of climbing stairs/ladders while wearing PPE and SCBA.
Required Equipment:
  • All required PPE will be provided.
  • Medical monitoring will be conducted prior to training activities. Blood pressure must be below NFPA 1582 Stage 2 Hypertension levels (systolic ≥160 mm Hg or diastolic ≥100 mm Hg). Students not meeting this requirement will not be allowed to participate.
  • Students are encouraged to bring work gloves and sturdy shoes for field exercises.
Course Fee: FREE for Louisiana and Federal First Responders
Dress Code: Long pants, closed-toe shoes, and short- or long-sleeve shirts are required. At the instructor’s discretion, shorts may be allowed during certain practical exercises.

Directions: Directions to the classroom will be provided in your confirmation email.
Lodging: Lodging will be provided at the Joint Emergency Services Training Center (JESTC) Staff Development Center or at the LSP Training Academy in Baton Rouge, at no cost for students residing more than 50 miles from the training site.
Meals: Lunch is provided for all students. Breakfast is also provided for students lodging at the Staff Development Center.
Note: Evening meals are the responsibility of the student.
