4th Period: Texas History: Part II (7-12th grade)

In this class students will learn a wide range of important lessons about Texas. These are just some of the topics we will cover.

I. Early Texas (Pre-1821):

  • Natural Texas and its People:
Explore the diverse Native American tribes, their cultures, and interactions with early European explorers. 
  • (1528-1690):
Examine Spanish and French exploration, the first attempts at settlement, and early encounters with Native Americans.
  •  Spanish Colonial Texas (1690-1821):
Analyze the establishment of missions and presidios, the growth of settlements like San Antonio, and the influence of the Catholic Church. 

II. Mexican Texas (1821-1835):

  • Mexican National Period:
Investigate the transition from Spanish rule to Mexican control, the introduction of the Mesa Plan, and the impact of Mexican independence on Texas. 
  • The Texas Revolution (1835-1836):
Analyze the causes of the revolution, key battles like the Alamo, the establishment of the Republic of Texas, and the Battle of San Jacinto. 

III. Republic of Texas and Early Statehood (1836-1860):

  • The Republic of Texas (1836-1845):
Examine the challenges faced by the republic, including its attempts at annexation into the United States and its internal conflicts.
  • Early Statehood (1845-1860):
Discuss the annexation of Texas, the Mexican-American War, and the issues of slavery and westward expansion. 

IV. Texas During the Civil War and Reconstruction (1861-1876):

  • Civil War
  • Reconstruction

V. Post-Reconstruction to the Present:

  • Cotton, Cattle, and Railroads (1870-1900)
  • The Age of Oil (1901-1929)
  • The Great Depression and World War II
  • Civil Rights movement
