Description

  • Woven Shibori is a variation on traditional shibori dyeing that is dependent on the weaving process to create dyed patterns in hand-woven cloth. In this class, we will take time to explore dye interactions and patterns before starting a larger project.
  • My woven shibori process incorporates two stages of dyeing: 1) base color and 2) overdye. The color combinations are infinite and so it is most interesting if all participants share their results before starting a larger project.
  • This class will use Procion MX fiber reactive dyes. If there is interest, we can also try making a vat dye (which requires a different type of dye and heat) for the second overdye step.
Prerequisites
  • Must be able to warp your loom (either 4 or 8 harness) at home and be able to read and follow a draft.
  • You will need to be able to weave with 2 shuttles when weaving the weft shibori at home.

Materials to be provided by/additional instructions for students
  • Participants will weave 10 or more samples between Class 1 and 2. Samples are to be 6-8 inches long
  • Weaving will be done at home. Participants should be able to warp and weave on a 4-8 harness loom. Two shuttles will be used for WEFT shibori
  • Drafts will be sent out to participants before the class begins. Recommended yarn: cotton, rayon, bamboo about the size of 5/2 perle cotton. Samples should be 8-10: wide
  • Bring two empty bobbins to Class 1

Please bring a lunch or snack if you would like. Access to a refrigerator and microwave are available in the building.

Materials/Equipment to be provided by TWG:
  • A demo loom will be made available at TFAC for those who do not have an 8-harness loom and would like to try alternate treadlings.
