Introduction to Contraception for Healthcare Professionals (CPD Accredited)
Course Overview
This CPD accredited 2-day Introduction to Contraception course is designed for healthcare professionals working in Primary Care and community settings who are developing their knowledge and confidence in providing contraceptive advice. It is particularly suitable for clinicians who are newer to contraception or expanding their clinical role to include contraceptive consultations.
The course provides a comprehensive, evidence-based introduction to all contraceptive methods, including combined hormonal contraception, progestogen-only methods, long-acting reversible contraception (LARC), injectable contraception, and emergency contraception. Particular emphasis is placed on applying the UK Medical Eligibility Criteria (UKMEC) 2025 guidance, supporting safe contraceptive provision, and developing confidence in structured contraceptive assessment and patient counselling.
Delivered by experienced clinicians actively working in Primary Care and contraception services, the training focuses on practical application, clinical safety, and patient-centred care.

Progestogen-only contraception, including desogestrel and drospirenone-containing pills
Emergency contraception, including oral and intrauterine options
Long-acting reversible contraception (intrauterine contraception and implant), including counselling and method selection
Injectable contraception, including repeat administration within scope of practice
Applying UKMEC 2025 guidance to support safe contraceptive provision
Conducting structured contraceptive consultations and pill checks
Principles of asymptomatic STI screening in Primary Care
Patient-centred contraceptive counselling
