What they will learn: In this interactive course, students will take on the roles of senators and representatives to debate real-world legislation in a simulated congressional setting. They’ll learn how to research current issues, draft bills and resolutions, deliver persuasive speeches, and engage in structured questioning. The course emphasizes advanced debate skills—organization, flowing, strategic argumentation, and confident public speaking—while encouraging collaboration and respect for diverse viewpoints.

How it applies to the real world: Congressional Debate teaches students to analyze complex topics, think critically about public policy, and communicate effectively in group discussions. These skills translate directly to leadership, teamwork, and civic engagement—essential abilities for academic and personal success.

Deliverable: By the end of the course, students will participate in a full mock congressional session, presenting and debating original legislation. They’ll receive individualized feedback to refine their delivery, argument structure, and strategy in preparation for future tournaments or advanced debate programs.

*Prerequisite: Students enrolling in this class must have taken at least 1 semester of Art of Public Speaking or Introductory Limited Preps.
