Interpretation (Declamation) (4th-5th)
What they will learn:
In this expressive and performance-focused class, students will explore the art of Declamation—the interpretation and delivery of powerful speeches and literary works. Through guided practice, students will learn how to analyze meaning, express emotion, and bring written words to life using their voice, face, and body. Lessons emphasize vocal control, pacing, posture, and stage presence while building confidence in public speaking and performance.
How it applies to the real world:
Declamation helps students strengthen public speaking, critical thinking, and emotional intelligence. By learning to interpret and present literature, students build communication and storytelling skills that are valuable for leadership, presentations, and any situation requiring poise and clarity. The confidence developed through performing also supports personal expression and empathy for diverse perspectives.
Deliverable:
Students will select, rehearse, and perform a memorized declamation piece, showcasing their growth in vocal delivery and interpretation. Performances will be recorded for tournament competition and featured in a live end-of-semester showcase.
*Prerequisite: Students enrolling in this class must have taken at least 1 semester of Art of Public Speaking, Introductory Limited Prep, or completed advanced Little Orator classes.
