Class Description:

This workshop provides a practical tour of the tools catalogers use daily: what they’re for, where to find them, and which are free vs. subscription. We’ll move through the basics—description, encoding, subjects/genres, classification, and authority work—with clear examples and quick demos. We’ll cover essentials (RDA Toolkit, MARC 21, LC manuals and value lists, ClassWeb, Homosaurus, Getty vocabularies, OLAC/MLA/ARLIS best practices) and show free alternatives when subscriptions aren’t available.

Who should attend:

Cataloging or metadata staff and librarians. No prior cataloging experience required.

Learning outcomes:

  • Identify core tools for description, subjects/genres, classification, and authority work.
  • Distinguish free/open resources from subscription platforms and choose workable free alternatives.
  • Apply simple “which tool for which task” decisions to common scenarios (copy cataloging, basic original, fixing headings).
  • Use tools that support critical and inclusive cataloging.

Prerequisites:

  • None

Credits:

  • 2 Library Education Units (LEUs) for Indiana library staff
