Beginning Ceramics (Saturday Evenings, 6 weeks)

Skill Level: No experience necessary!
*25-pound bag of clay included. Additional clay needed will be available for purchase.
This 6-week course is designed to introduce students to clay using the potter's wheel. In this class students will create functional tableware. Students will learn the basics with step-by-step instruction on how to throw a cylinder and a bowl. Students will finish forms with trimming, adding handles, knobs and some surface decoration. Students will learn a variety of techniques by being introduced to various decorating and glazing techniques. Please come to class ready to practice, get dirty and have fun! One bag of clay with all glazes and firings are included, additional clay is available for purchase.
Note: It is recommended that you take this course more than once before you move on to Intermediate Ceramics.
Instructor: Brent Viste
Brent Viste is the Gift Shop Manager at Paris Gibson Square Museum of Art. He was born in Missoula and grew up in Great Falls.
He serves in a forward-facing position at the museum and is ready to greet all who enter with positivity and museum information. Brent is directly responsible for the overall management and operation for the Gift Shop. He sets goals and objectives, oversees inventory management, sales, artist consignment coordination and customer service. He is responsible for the appearance and presentation of the Gift Shop to the community and to visitors. He works with a Gift Shop committee consisting of individuals from the community to process calls for Gift Shop artists and to vet selections of artwork.
As an active artist himself, Brent enjoys the frequent interactions with fellow artists and art lovers who visit the museum and gift shop. Brent shares his passion for ceramics as an instructor, teaching pottery classes and leading pottery date nights at The Square. He received a Bachelor in Studio Arts from Concordia College in Moorhead, MN. While earning his degree he also worked for a local art museum and gallery and learned as much or more about art from that experience. When not at The Square, he can be found exploring the natural beauty Montana has to offer or making pottery.
