Coloring Outside the Lines with Michelle Swafford

Are you ready to move on from commercial glazes and start developing your own unique glaze palette? This is the class for you!

Clay Center founder and former ceramics professor Michelle Swafford will teach you how to turn one glaze you love into an endless palette of new glazes.

In this 4-week class, you'll:

  • Learn about the raw materials and basic science behind ceramic glazes.
  • Mix small glaze batches from raw materials.
  • Develop new color and texture variations using just a handful of ingredients.
  • Expand your glaze palette quickly and easily using blending techniques.

This course includes most of the content from Michelle's popular Glaze Mixing & Materials workshop, as well as new content and hands-on glaze mixing and testing lessons.

Students will mix small glaze batches using an existing glaze recipe as a starting point. If you have a glaze recipe you like, please email it to info@nolaclay.org so we can check if we have the materials on hand.

Due to the technical nature of this course, we highly recommend taking Michelle's Glazing 101 workshop as a prerequisite.

Course Level

This course is appropriate for students at the following levels:

  • Intermediate
  • Advanced

Please note that this is NOT a beginner-level workshop. If you're relatively new to ceramics or just want to improve your results with commercial or studio glazes, please consider taking Michelle's Glazing 101 workshop instead.

Good to know

  • Students will be making several dozen test tiles in Week 1. We have a variety of clay bodies available for purchase, but you can also bring any cone 6 clay body you like using.
  • Please bring a notebook or sketchbook and a pen for keeping glaze test records.
  • If you've never been to the Clay Center, please click here to review our location and parking information.
  • If you have any questions at all, please just email us at info@nolaclay.org!
