Tues 09:00 - 10:00 -- 668TA Astronomy: The Inexplicable Universe: Unsolved Mysteries
Astronomy is one of humanity’s oldest sciences, and its greatest discoveries, advancements, and technological developments tell a remarkably compelling story about our universe. Telescopes are the primary tools astronomers use to explore the universe and as the technology of telescope design progressed into space-based telescopes, so has our understanding of the cosmos. As a follow up to last terms discussion of the Hubble Space Telescope, we will start this course with a discussion of phenomenal engineering and remarkable images of its successor, the James Webb Space Telescope. Then through the Great Course - The Inexplicable Universe: Unsolved Mysteries, one of America’s most noted astronomers and director of the Hayden Planetarium, Neil deGrasse Tyson, will explore several of the most tantalizing, mind mending questions at the forefront of scientific inquiry. Professor Tyson’s vast knowledge and superb ability to explain the most intimidating science in an accessible, entertaining and enjoyable manner makes him uniquely qualified to take us on this journey. So please join our moderator, Don Risi, for an informative and eye-opening tour through the cosmos.
