Mardi Gras & Carnival Traditions

Facilitated by: Professor Sherry Keith

MADI GRAS & CARNIVAL are celebrated widely on both sides of the Atlantica. We will explore four of its many manifestations: First in Europe, then in  Brazil, moving to the steel drums of Trinidad and ending with Madi Gras in New Orleans. We will experience the unique music in each location, the dances, the costumes, and “manners” of these days of wild abandon.  We will see, hear and move to the many rhythms which have evolved from this ancient yet still ongoing celebration. Come prepared to enjoy yourself and to participate in the enjoyment as you are able.

Sherry Keith, Professor Emeritus of Social Science and History at San Francisco State University,  will guide participants through the ins and outs of this iconic and iconoclastic celebration. She has lived, taught and danced throughout the Caribbean and South America. Sherry is the author of several memoirs of the times she has lived in the lands of Carnival including The Alligator’s Tooth and The Pan Americans as well as novel, Brazil Lost and Found , which explores Brazilian culture and especially Brazilian music.
