CONTINUING BEGINNER GUITAR IN OPEN TUNING

Course Prerequisite: Total Beginner Guitar or the Equivalent

To enroll in this class, please be able to tune your guitar, play OFF/ON chord positions in Open G, and be comfortable playing our SmartStart Open G chord, the Easy C and and the Easy D (D7) chords.

If you are someone who has never studied with our organization before, but you play a little bit of guitar in standard tuning, you are still welcome, but there is preparation for you to do. We can send you information ahead of time on how to tune your guitar to Open G and play our beginning chords. Please write to jess@guitarsintheclassroom.org to let her know if this is your situation and she will help you. Thank you.

This course is a natural next step for people who took Total Beginner and want more practice with the basics before progressing to standard tuning. We will review what you learned in Total Beginner, and take you farther. You will get faster at chord changes, add some new strums, and you’ll add the Em chord to your repertoire. If the group progresses together quickly, we can explore standard tuning.

You’ll learn practical songs for your classroom teaching, utilize primary GITC song leadership techniques, and compose some simple Lyrics for Learning using familiar melodies. You’ll also get a chance to collaborate with other teachers to create songs for boosting student creativity, literacy skills, memory, and social-emotional awareness.

This course will also support you to develop your singing voice, vocal skills, and tune up your musical ear! Kristen Herbert, GITC teaching artist and faculty trainer, has been teaching private voice lessons for many years. She can help you begin to develop your ability to sing with more ease and strength. Her teaching style is very fun!

Thanks to ear training, you’ll learn ways you can help yourself to begin to sing more in tune. You’ll begin to develop excellent breath support for your voice so notes come out clearer and last longer. Kristen will also help you experience how ways that change the shape of your mouth can make it possible to reach and amplify notes you didn’t think you could reach!

This course is intended to start you on the path to feeling more confident in leading students in song, and will give you techniques to protect and project your voice safely in the classroom and outdoors.

For anyone needing more review, we recommend taking Total Beginner Guitar a second time. We don’t mind!

All classes in this series will be taught from 4-5:00pm PT / 5-6:00pm MT / 6-7:00pm CT / 7-8:00pm ET.
