Kindergarten Literacy | Foundations for Reading

Days: Mondays AND Wednesdays

Time: 10:15 AM - 10:55 AM

Location: Fillmore Library (502 2nd St, Fillmore, CA 93015)

Program Description:

Early Literacy lays the groundwork for strong, confident readers through systematic, explicit instruction grounded in the science of reading. Designed for pre-readers and emerging readers, this small-group class focuses on building the foundational skills necessary for accurate decoding, spelling (encoding), and early reading success.

Instruction follows a structured, cumulative sequence using predictable routines that support mastery and confidence. Lessons are intentionally focused and skill-based, allowing students to develop strong reading habits in a supportive learning environment.

Students will:

  • Develop phonemic awareness through explicit practice in blending, segmenting, isolating, and manipulating sounds
  • Learn letter–sound correspondences using direct instruction and guided practice
  • Build phoneme–grapheme mapping skills through word-building and structured encoding routines
  • Practice decoding and early word reading with carefully controlled text when developmentally appropriate
  • Strengthen handwriting and letter formation through guided practice and dictation

What a typical session includes:

  • Oral phonemic awareness warm-up
  • Explicit introduction and cumulative review of target letter–sound correspondences
  • Word-building and phoneme–grapheme mapping activities
  • Blending and decoding practice
  • Dictation and encoding practice
  • Connected text reading when students are ready

Instruction is explicit, systematic, and cumulative, ensuring that each lesson builds on prior learning. Mixed skill levels are appropriate, as instruction is carefully scaffolded within the small-group setting.

Off-Site Program Note: Because this course is offered at an off-site location, a parent or guardian is required to remain on site for the duration of the class. This helps ensure a supportive and safe learning environment for all students while allowing the class to run smoothly within shared community spaces. Please note this course is subject to cancellation or postponement based on enrollment numbers.
