No Limit Pottery! - Large Pot Making with Kate Waltman

2 day Large Pot Workshop!

Sat Feb 21st 10 am - 5pm

Sun Feb 22nd 10am - 5pm

Want to learn how to throw bigger pots? This workshop is for you!

This workshop will be taught by world renowned and owner of Triangle Studio in Seagrove NC, Kate Waltman.

Kate’s pots are made with local materials, boldly carved with organic patterns inspired by Art Deco design, and fired in a large wood-burning kiln. Kate shows her pots internationally and has lectured and taught throughout the USA.

Intermediate wheel throwing skills are needed but not required.
Experience in making large pieces is not required.

Students will learn how to combine wheel and hand building (coiling) to make beautiful large pieces.

Pieces are limited to 25 in Tall x 25in Wide

Coffee, Juice and Light snacks will be provided.

Students will break for lunch midday. Lunch Time TBD

Tools

Students will need to bring:

  • 12in or 14in 3/8in Wooden/Medex bat
  • Large Throwing rib
    • Decorating tools, Slip trailer, carving tools

Some community tools and bats are available at the studio.

End of Workshop Details

  • If you plan to fire your piece else where they must be taken at the end of the workshop or within a week after the workshop ends. Non fired pieces are easier to transfer when they are wet or leather hard.
  • You can purchase Bisque firing, cone 6 glaze firing, cone 10+ (cone 10 - cone 13) wood firing space with your workshop registration or during/after the workshop
  • Pieces being fired at the studio will be worked into our normal firing schedule over the following weeks.

Cone 6 Glaze Fire Details

  • The clay used during the workshop is Cone 10+ clay. You can fire it to cone 6 but it may be porous and not perfectly suitable to hold water (think terracotta) or for outside use.

Wood Fire Details

  • We are offering Space in our New Wood Kiln for cone 10+ firing. We have glazes on hand for use and firing will happen later spring early summer.

Disclaimer:

We aim to create Large Pots that you may bring home and use. Despite our best efforts sometimes not all the pottery pieces make it through both kiln firings. This is rare but in the case a piece does not come out in tact please remember this is part of the pottery process and this does not mean guests are entitled to a makeup class or to a refund. This class is all about the experience.
