Rope Sewing on a Sewing Machine

Basketeer and experienced rope sewer, Karen Admire of The Mountain Thread Company, will guide you in creating 3 small beginning rope projects using coiled rope basketry techniques on your own sewing machine. Together, we will create a coaster, a small trinket basket, and a shallow basket. You'll learn how to use your specific machine to create basic pieces, and how to use fabric and thread to make them your own. We'll cover rope types, shapes, and the rationale for starting with the round shape, along with any other questions you may have. We'll also troubleshoot any difficulties with individual machines and how to continue your rope sewing journey beyond the course.

The $15 partial supply fee covers one bundle of 10 yds of rope and one glue stick, which the instructor will provide. Otherwise, participants need to bring:

Portable sewing machine in working order*

Cotton quilting thread in neutral and/or color Bobbins (pre-wind for each color thread)

Thread scissors

Scissors for rope (a pair will be available for participant use)

Seam Ripper

Scrap fabric from your stash (we'll use 1/4-1/2" strips)

Denim machine needle (100/16)

*Sewing machine will need a zigzag stitch, and is powerful enough to hem a pair of jeans (Most machines can easily sew rope!)

One sewing machine will be available for a $20 rental fee. Please contact Krista at admin@watauga-arts.org if you wish to pursue this option.
