Designing Online Courses with Backwards Design
This hands-on workshop introduces participants to Backward Design, a student-centered framework for creating effective and engaging online learning experiences. We will begin with a 20-minute overview of the Backward Design model—covering its three key stages:
- Identifying desired learning outcomes
- Determining acceptable evidence and assessments
- Planning learning activities and content
After the brief introduction, participants will spend the remainder of the workshop actively applying the Backward Design process to an online course of their choice. Through guided exercises, collaborative discussion, and practical templates, attendees will:
- Clarify meaningful and measurable learning outcomes
- Develop aligned assessments that directly measure those outcomes
- Map out instructional activities and tools that support learner success
- Begin drafting a structured course plan they can continue refining after the workshop
By the end of the session, each participant will leave with a strong start on a fully aligned online course design, along with actionable strategies and resources to continue improving their course.
Attendees will receive 10 ATLE points for active participation.
