Mosaic Memorial Stones
PREREQUISITE: THIS CLASS IS OPEN TO STUDENTS WHO HAVE COMPLETED MY INTRODUCTION TO MOSAICS CLASS OR A COMPARABLE CLASS. The introductory class (see introductory class description) covers the fundamentals of indoor mosaics, from design through grouting and finishing. Students who complete the introductory class have a solid foundation to complete indoor mosaic projects on their own.
If you have not taken my introductory class, please contact me before registering for the Mosaic Memorial Stones class.
OVERVIEW: In the memorial stones class, I'll present tips and techniques for making outdoor mosaics, which require special adhesive and grout. You will design, glue, and grout a medium-sized rock suitable for outdoor use, with the design honoring or memorializing a beloved friend, family member, or pet. You will learn how to mix and finish epoxy grout to make your rock waterproof and able to withstand the elements. There will be minimal cutting and shaping of tiles, if any. To make your design your own, you will choose your color scheme and mosaic materials.
MATERIALS: The materials for this project will consist of a medium-sized river rock, adhesive, ball chain, glass tiles, pewter message tokens, miscellanous ceramic tiles (such as hearts, dog bones, dog houses, cat shapes, and cat paw prints), and epoxy grout. There will be minimal cutting and shaping of tiles, if any. To make your design your own, you will choose your color scheme and mosaic materials.
CLASS SESSIONS: Each class will consist of two 3-hour sessions, one week apart (depending on how fast you work, you might not need the full 3 hours). You will lay out and glue down your mosaic piece during the first 3-hour class session. You will grout your piece in the second 3-hour session. If for some reason you have a conflict for the second class (grouting), I might be able to fit you into a grouting session for another scheduled rock class.
WHAT IS PROVIDED: 1) All supplies and tools (rocks, glass tiles, ceramic embellishments, adhesive, aprons, safety glasses, latex gloves, grout, sealant, paper towels, etc.), and 2) guidance and assistance from the instructor.
WHAT TO BRING: 1) Water bottle (if desired), and 2) clothes you don't mind getting stained with glue or grout.
