A blade set in a block of wood has been pushed or pulled cross a plank for hundreds of years to shape and smooth its surface. Europeans and Chinese push, Japanese pull, and Americans engineer. Today’s Stanley plane engineered by Leonard Bailey in 1858 dominates Western culture. Who doesn’t have dad or granddad’s old plane, most likely in unusable condition? We will look at and use three types of planes and see how to restore our old Stanley into a better tool than it was new and as good as any plane that can be bought today.
