Commands:
“Cease fire”, This command can be called by anyone. Upon hearing this command, you should loudly repeat the command to make sure everyone else that may not have heard the command hears it. You will stop shooting immediately, go to low ready and wait for further instructions from the RSO’s.
“Fill magazines to (x round count)”, This will be the command to insert rounds into the magazine but is NOT a command to load your pistol or make your pistol ready to fire.
“Draw to the ready”, This will be the command to draw your pistol from the holster in a quick smooth action and get a sight picture on the target with a 2 handed grip.
“Load and make ready”, This will be the command to load your filled magazine into the magazine well of your pistol and rack the slide to load one round into the chamber or your pistol. If your pistol has a safety this is not the time to disengage the safety.
“Is the line ready?”, This is a question that requires a negative response, if you are ready do not say anything. If everyone says yes at the same time the RSO can not hear the one NO in a sea of YES’s. If you are not ready say something loudly but do not turn towards the RSO’s maintain facing downrange in the safe direction.
“The firing line is ready”, This will be a statement that follows the “Is the line ready?” command and is your last chance to inform the RSO’s that you are not ready.
“Stand by”, The auditable beep of the shot timer will follow indicating you can now disengage your safety and commence firing the course of fire.
“Unload and show clear”, This will be the command do remove the magazine from your pistol and set it on the table, cycle the slide to remove a round that may still be in the chamber and lock it to the rear, while using visual and tactile feel check the chamber and mag well to confirm the firearm is unloaded and clear then allow your coach or an RSO to verify that the firearm is clear by using sight and tactile touch. When presenting the fire arm for verification DO NOT turn around just remain standing with firearm pointed in the safe direction.
There will be many other instructions the Chief RSO will give you during the event and these instructions/commands will be in plain English that will describe the actions you are to take such as “You may now remove your firearm from the its case, remove the magazine, verify that it is clear, lock the slide to the rear and place it on the table with the breach facing up and the magazine next to it on the table”.
