Description

This will be a demonstration of how to wind a multi colored skein in such a way as to create a color pooled warp.

There are videos on YouTube that show the process, but they make it look simpler than it is. My intention is to demonstrate how it works with a particularly obnoxious skein. Participants are welcome to bring their own skein for analysis and discussion but there won’t be time for participants to try color pooling their own skein.

I set myself the challenge of weaving with unknittable yarn. Most of it was meant to be selfstriping, but failed because the color sequence was too short and the colors either ran together or made blotches. There are videos on YouTube that show the process, but they make it look simpler than it is. My intention is to demonstrate how it works with a particularly obnoxious skein. Participants are welcome to bring their own skein for analysis and discussion but there won’t be time for participants to try color pooling their own skein.

When you buy a warp that is meant to make crosswise stripes, it was wound with the intention of weaving it and the colors are lined up because it was dyed as a warp. With yarn that is wound in skeins, the outer layers are longer than the inner layers and the stripes shift as you knit or wind a warp. The repeats are frequently linear and require winding as circular warps. Some space dyed yarn can be wound like a normal warp for a tweedy effect. Many produce an effect that one of my knitting groups refers to as "clown barf."

Prerequisites for participants:

You will get the most out of this Illoomination if you are familiar with winding a warp.

Materials to be provided by/additional instructions for students:

Participants may bring their own skein for analysis and discussion but there won’t be time for participants to try color pooling their own skein.
