Poetry in Unusual Places: Finding Inspiration Beyond the Page
A 4-Week Zoom Course | Thursdays in April and May 7-9 p.m.
Do you long to write poetry, but sometimes struggle to find inspiration? Or maybe you think you don't know the "right way to write poetry?" Maybe you love to read it, but you just aren't sure if you have the talent to create it.
This 4-week course invites you to discover or rediscover poetry as a living, breathing art that waits for you in the most unexpected corners of your daily life. (Think dreams, pop culture, or tarot.)
Together, we’ll explore how to generate authentic poems from unconventional sources.
Each week, you’ll:
- Explore poetic catalysts such as dreams, tarot and oracle cards, film and television scenes, overheard conversations, and more.
- Read poems that break the rules by writers such as Ada Limón, Tracy K. Smith, Ilya Kaminsky, and CAConrad.
- Dive into guided prompts that help you transform seemingly ordinary experiences into luminous verse.
- Experiment with free and intuitive forms, focusing on the rhythm of language, sensory imagery, and emotional resonance.
- Share your work in a supportive community where creative risk-taking and curiosity are celebrated.
By the end of the course, you’ll have a small portfolio of new poems—and a toolkit for continuing to find poetic inspiration in your dreams, your environment, and your everyday moments.
No prior poetry experience required! Whether you’ve written a hundred poems or none, this class is designed to help you deepen your voice, reconnect with your creative intuition, and uncover poetry wherever life takes you.
Come ready to listen closely, look differently, and write bravely. You might be surprised where the next poem finds you.
