Large Purchases - What Can I Afford?
Preparing for Large Purchases: What Can I Really Afford?
Big purchases can feel exciting—and overwhelming—especially when you’re balancing classes, work, and everyday expenses. This interactive workshop is designed to help college students confidently prepare for major financial decisions like buying a car, renting an apartment, upgrading technology, or planning for life after graduation.
Participants will learn how to determine what they can realistically afford by understanding income, expenses, credit, and long-term financial impact. We’ll break down common mistakes students make with large purchases and share practical tools to help you avoid financial stress now and in the future.
In this workshop, students will learn how to:
- Define “affordable” beyond just the monthly payment
- Create a realistic spending plan for a large purchase
- Understand how credit scores, interest rates, and loans affect total cost
- Compare needs vs. wants when making financial decisions
- Ask the right questions before signing a contract or loan agreement
By the end of the session, students will walk away with a clearer understanding of how to make smart, informed purchasing decisions that align with their financial goals—both now and after college.
