Jordan and Virginia Connecting Through COIL
In this webinar we will explore the intercultural competence, awareness, and tolerance that can be gained when undergraduate psychology students in Virginia and English language learners in Jordan spend 6 weeks negotiating cultural and linguistic differences to create videos presented synchronously across time zones. Over the past few years, we have been working to enhance the transformative potential of COIL for our students while strengthening academic and critical thinking skills related to either psychological foundations of cross-cultural behavior or foreign language competence. This webinar will cover our journey from initial impressions to challenges encountered, the role of real-time collaboration in fostering cultural understanding, and our use student reflection as a platform for assessment and future enhancements.
