Defensive Shotgun I

Course Description:

The shotgun is one of the most effective and versatile weapons available to the average private citizen or police officer. It is also the least understood and most under-utilized weapon system. Learn how to properly select, modify, feed and operate the defensive shotgun for optimum effectiveness. This intensive one day course will teach you efficient techniques for handling and shooting the shotgun under stressful conditions. Topics covered include:

  • Firearms safety, including considerations specific to shotguns
  • Selection of the fighting shotgun
  • Modifications and Accessories
  • Ammunition selection and capabilities
  • Patterning for optimum performance
  • Shooting technique
  • Loading/reloading techniques
  • Safe storage and ready conditions, including 'cruiser' or 'closet' ready
  • Care and maintenance

Course Requirements: Participants must be 18 years of age or older. No prior training necessary.

Required Equipment:
  • Shotgun: Pump-action or semi-automatic, with a stock. (Shotguns with detachable magazines will not benefit from this course; Birdshead or short pistol grip only shotguns are not allowed.)
  • Ammo Loadout: Typically 150-200 rounds of birdshot (for training), 50 rounds of 00 buckshot (for defensive patterning), and 15 slugs.
  • Slings: Will not be needed.
  • Ammunition Management: Sidesaddles, butt cuffs, or pouches to hold extra shells on your person or the gun.
  • Safety Gear: Wraparound eye protection, ear protection (earmuffs/plugs), and a hat with a brim to protect from hot brass.

Note: We have loaner shotguns available to students that are properly setup for this class. Please let us know ahead of time if you will need one.

Clothing and Other Items:
  • Clothing: Long pants and high-neck shirts are recommended to protect against hot shells.
  • Footwear: Sturdy, closed-toe shoes suitable for movement.
  • Note-taking: Pen and paper.

About the Range:
Golden Triangle Gun Club, Inc. is an outdoor shooting range with modern climate controlled, clean, restrooms. Classroom is climate controlled with coffee bar and refrigerator available for use during class. Vending machine is available onsite with water, soft drinks, and sports drinks along with some snacks.
