Intro to Woodcarving: Kitchen Utensils
Join us for this introductory woodcarving workshop, in which participants will learn how to shape and carve wooden kitchen utensils!
Beginning with a spoon blank, students will be shown how to safely and efficiently use a variety of hand tools such as gouges, rasps, files, scrapers, and handsaws. For their second project, students will cut their own blanks on the bandsaw before moving on to carving and shaping. They may choose to work from a template or develop their own design.
Whether making spoons, spatulas, forks, knives, or something completely new, students will leave with one or two unique utensils for use in their own kitchen! This class is ideal for those who are new to woodworking or interested in getting started in wood carving. No shop experience is necessary.
Instructor: L.N. Adams is a New England based object maker, woodworker and educator. They create sculpture as well as functional objects utilizing traditional and contemporary methods of woodworking. Their wood sculptures serve as instruments for reaching into other dimensions, bridging the space between the material world and the unseen. In their teaching practice Adams aims to create spaces that are safe, encouraging and supportive; giving their students the tools and resources needed for hands-on exploration. Adams is particularly interested in working and collaborating with those who are historically excluded from the field of woodworking. Adams currently manages the Woodshop at Massachusetts College of Art and Design where they work closely with students enrolled in sculpture, furniture and architecture programs.
Note: This is a three session class - please make sure you are available for all dates and times.
