Mixed Media Textile Assemblages with Alice Vander Vennen
Course Overview: Create an evocative and exciting art piece that combines the work of your hands with that of Mother Nature. Juxtapose fibre art with natural materials to create a framed, stitched, three-dimensional textile assemblage. Allow the rich textures, brilliant colours and nuanced lines of stitched textiles to interact with the mysterious beauty of the imprinted stone, the gentle branch, or a fragile leaf. Incorporate glowing copper and wire, fabric transfers of precious photos, or tell a story with the remnants of an heirloom quilt. Work with a variety of textiles, including remnants of your own stitched, embroidered and embellished work, new fabrics, and found pieces of textiles that catch your eye or speak to your heart. You will also be led through the process of finishing, mounting and framing the art piece. Frames, framing material and any other materials that participants might want will be available for purchase at cost from the instructor.

Supply List:
Found objects
- You will experiment and work with found objects. Bring random things — little stones or ceramic shards, found objects of any sort, like an old key, a piece of jewelry, rusted metal, anything that catches your eye and your interest. Remember, it’s going to fit in a shadow box frame, so not too large.
Colour
- You will also be exploring coloured fabrics (and papers if you choose), so if you can, bring many different colours and textures, even those that you are not used to working with. Different coloured threads are wonderful too. Please bring threads of different colours. Grey is lovely to go with, any metallic or other colours that you find attractive – stay away from white. Each person will also need approximately half a metre of black felt. The instructor will have extra if you are not able to get this.
Sewing Machine and Materials
- This class is set up so that you may work with a sewing machine or not. If you are comfortable working with a sewing machine and have one that is easy to transport, you are welcome to bring it along. If you are traveling, the instructor will have two extra sewing machines available for you to use as needed.
- Please bring anything that you need for sewing — pins, needles, threads, scissors. And needle-nosed pliers, as well.
- Different types of glues will be available if you would rather not do as much sewing.
