Drawing: Essentials and Explorations by Marta Scythes
Course Overview: Immerse yourself in the fascinating discipline of drawing while exploring a range of techniques and materials. Participants will be introduced to drawing and shading methods using media such as graphite, carbon and ink, while gaining familiarity with the properties, brands and uses of papers and tools to make informed creative choices. Basic perspective and composition will be studied and applied through guided exercises. Students will create both realistic images and personal interpretations while working from a variety of subject matter. The course focuses on strengthening observation skills and developing the technical ability and confidence needed to continue drawing as a lifelong practice.

Important Notes:
- Course fee: $400.00 (General) or $365.00 (Senior 55+). HST is not included in the price.
- This course takes place at the Belleville Campus: 376 Wallbridge Loyalist Rd, Belleville, ON K8N 5B9.
- Campus information, including room number, parking, directions, etc., will be provided closer to the start date.
- A refund (less $20.00 administrative fee) will be issued if you withdraw from a class at least 14 days before the start date of the class. After this deadline, no refunds will be issued.
- If a course is cancelled by Loyalist College, registered students will be provided with a full refund. College decisions to cancel a course will be made 14 days before the course start date.

Papers:
- Sketch pad or blank journal for notes, small exercises – medium size
- 18 x 24” newsprint pad
- Bristol smooth paper – 1 sheet or small pad
- Mid-tone pastel paper, grey or any mid-value colour – 1 sheet or small pad
Media:
- Graphite pencils (4H, 2H, HB, - 4B or 6B) - Staedtler brand or any pencils you have
- Black General’s Charcoal pencil or Wolff’s carbon pencil - 6B
- Black conté stick (France)
- White General’s Charcoal pencil
- India ink, stylus, nibs & small watercolour brushes or - Pigma Micron, felt tipped pen, size 01
- Optional: Graphite stick – Cretacolour
Misc:
- 12” Ruler, masking tape
- Small pencil sharpener
- White eraser
- Tortillion (blending stump) - large
- Light weight drawing board, 18 x 24” (optional- college has some)
- Large clip for holding paper onto board
- Optional: small utility knife for sharpening pencils
Purely Optional (only if you have on hand):
- Tracing paper – instructor will have some to share
- Pastels or Coloured Pencils – instructor will have some to share
- French curves (drafting tools) – instructor will have some to share
- Brushes (old, acrylic or oil - for dry painting) – instructor will have some to share
