Two Day - Medieval Illumination and Gold Leaf Course
Two Day - Medieval Illumination and Gold Leaf Course
Using an array of medieval techniques over this 2 day course you will learn how to illuminate and draw your own medieval Angel. Inspired by the queen Mary Apocalypse, a 13th Century illuminated Manuscript, we will peel back layers of history to understand how our medieval counterparts created such beautiful miniature artworks.
Who it’s for?
This course is suitable for complete beginners and people with some previous experience. 18+
What you'll learn
Illumination is the art of applying gold to paper or vellum with the resulting art works residing beside text and traditionally bound within manuscripts. Medieval illuminated manuscripts were highly prized items created by teams of skilled artisans. Taking an Angel from the Queen Mary Apocalypse as our inspiration you will be introduced to various gilding techniques including raised gesso, which illuminators use to give the illusion of liquid gold on the page. You will be guided through the process of transferring an image onto paper and using Oak gall ink and fine miniature brushes to ‘ink over’ your design. We will also grind pigments as a group to add colour and tone to our gilded Angels.
