This is a unique opportunity to experience both wood and stone carving on the same day. Award winning teachers William Barsley (wood) and Maria Moorhouse (stone) are both based on the Dartington Estate and have combined to bring you this special course. You will spend half the day carving wood and half the day carving stone, carving the same Greenman motif into both. This method allows you to expeirence the wonderful similarities and differences between the two crafts.
Who it’s for
Beginners or intermediates. Those looking to explore both materials and get a special insight into carving.
What you'll learn
We’ll start with a quick introduction about both types of carvings, how to the tools and safe carving practices, before trying out different cuts and patterns. Along the way, you’ll get a feel for the process of shaping and decorating wood and stone — with plenty of room to play, experiment, and enjoy the craft.

- Use of protective eye wear /masks
- Tea, coffee, and sweet treats to keep you fuelled
- The option to purchase extra blanks and tools if you’d like to keep practising at home
What to bring
- Aprons
- Pack lunch. If the weather is kind, you’re welcome to enjoy lunch on the picnic tables outside the studio, or you can eat at your workbench. Alternatively, there are two café's at the Cider Press Centre or a village shop nearby.
- Closed-toe shoes for safety

This courses with a minimum of six participants. If this number isn't met, we'll be in touch at least two weeks beforehand to offer alternative dates or a full refund.
