Taste of Sailing Overview

Irish Sailing’s ‘Taste of Sailing’ course offers adults a unique opportunity to experience the fundamentals of sailing in a structured and engaging environment. Designed for those new to the sport, this introductory program provides hands-on training under the guidance of experienced and accredited instructors, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience on the water.

No prior experience is required—just a keen interest in learning and a desire to explore the freedom and challenge of sailing.

This course is designed as an introduction to sailing for participants that have had no previous experience .

The course will run from 0930 to 4:30 00 Saturday and Sunday.


Objective

By the end of this course you will be able to do the following:

  • Identify basic boat parts
  • Understand basic sailing instructions
  • Identify wind direction
  • Reach across the wind
  • Stop the boat
  • Turn the boat through the wind (tack)
  • Help balance the boat
  • Raise and lower the dagger or centreboard and rudder
  • Have a good basic overview of sailing in a dinghy

Previous knowledge or experience

No previous experience required, just a good sense of adventure.

Medical Conditions

You must inform in advance if the participant has any know medical conditions, special needs and or behavior considerations that we should be aware of and or that would impact there ability to participate safely in all the activities.


Equipment

Buoyancy aids are provided by GBSC. Wetsuits are available however if sailors have their own wetsuits and boots, that is preferable for their own comfort.

Footwear

Sandals, Flip Flops, Crocs or other similar open shoes are NOT recommended.

We recommend Runners, Aqua Shoes or Wetsuit Boots.

On the Day

Please bring:

  • Your own wetsuit (if you have one) booties or old runners
  • Sunscreen, hat, sunglasses.
  • Towel, change of socks / underwear.
  • Warm dry clothing for when you come out of the water.
  • A notebook and pen/pencil (for coursework).
  • Lunch each day (if your course runs for the full day), water, hot drink.

Jewellery

We advise against wearing of jewellery, rings, necklaces etc. during courses as they can be either lost, become entangled and/or lead to injury.

 

Lost, found or stolen

Items left behind will be kept for a period of two week and if not claimed may be disposed of or repurposed thereafter.

​The GBSC cannot accept responsibility for any items lost, stolen or damaged.

Cancellation & Refund Policy

All cancellations by the customer must be made in writing by email or by phone to Galway Bay Sailing Club.

Cancellations received more than four (4) weeks prior to the course commencement date will be refunded in full.

Cancellations received between four (4) weeks and seven (7) days prior to the course commencement date will be eligible for a 50% refund.

Cancellations received within seven (7) days of the course start date are non-refundable, as instructor, vessel and safety resources will already have been committed.
