Savings and Investing 102: A Deeper Dive
Class fee is on a sliding scale of $10-$30, with suggested amount of $15, tea and sweets included!
Investing isn't just for rich people! Saving and investing is the key to building a more secure and stable future, whether that's for your retirement, supporting aging family, or building a college fund. This is a sequel class. Though I won't strictly enforce taking Investing 101, I will assume you have knowledge of mutual funds, ETFs, and other common investment assets, and roles of equity vs fixed income allocations in a portfolio. I also assume a familiarity with retirement accounts like 401k's and IRAs, and the differences between them. If you need a refresher, please first take Saving and Investing 101, offered monthly or do some preliminary googling.
In part 2 we're taking a closer look at the nuts and bolts of steering an investment over multiple years and smart tax planning.
Learning Objectives
- Relationship between returns, volatility, and time horizon
- Glidepaths and rebalancing, including while withdrawing
- Making the most of your savings with tax-smart planning
- Difference between risk capacity and tolerance in deciding your allocations
- Model out a hypothetical savings goal
- Review: Getting started with $25/week
It's very important that you have a good idea of your actual cashflow throughout the year so that you can know exactly how much you can afford to plant in your garden each month without needing to pull up those seedlings early when an unexpected bill crops up. I offer Personal Finance 101 and 102 monthly, so I highly recommend taking those if you'd like some more structure getting there. Look out for future classes covering benefits and tax planning, debt strategies, managing money as a couple, and more!
