Plasma Pop: Cartoon Characters in Metal

Description
In this class, students will be able to pick a simple, well-known character from fiction (cartoon characters preferred) and create a 2D layered metal representation of them. Students will plasma cut steel and use GMAW (MIG) welding to build up their design.

The pieces can be smoothed and polished, then sprayed with clear coat to prevent rust. An optional wall hanging hook can be added as well.

Don’t fancy drawing? No need to fear. Templates will be provided for students who don’t want to attempt their own designs.

Location
This class will meet at Liberty Arts Studio, located at 918 Pearl St., Durham, NC, United Stats

Pre-requisites
This class does not require any prior experience with welding or metal fabrication, but does require the ability to work around heat, noise, sharp edges, and power tools.
This class is beginner friendly.

Skills & Equipment
Students will learn the basics of plasma cutting and GMAW (MIG) welding, including how to safely operate equipment and work with layered metal designs. Students will also gain experience with basic metal finishing techniques such as smoothing, polishing, and applying clear coat.

Equipment used in this class includes a plasma cutter, MIG welder, and standard metal shop tools.

Materials
Students will be working with steel and all materials are included in the cost of the class.

Safety & PPE
Protective gloves, face shields, and ear plugs will be provided. Proper protective ware designed for welding and plasma cutting will be made mandatory to wear.

What to Wear
Students must wear non-synthetic, long-sleeve clothing and closed-toe shoes. Hair should be tied back. Comfortable clothes that can get dirty are recommended.

In the interest of safety, the instructor reserves the option to limit participation if students are not wearing appropriate clothing.
