Prerequisites: Students must have successfully completed 5th Grade ELA or equivalent, and be able to write in complete sentences and follow directions. Additionally, students are expected to be well versed in Shurley Grammar or sentence diagramming, as this program uses the 7th grade curriculum. If your student is unfamiliar with Shurley Grammar or sentence diagramming, it is STRONGLY RECOMMENDED that your student participate in Mrs. Kang’s Shurley Grammar summer prep class. Information regarding her summer prep class will be included in the syllabus.
The 6th Grade English/Language Arts program is designed to build strong grammar and writing skills necessary for success in middle and high school and beyond. Through the Shurley Grammar curriculum, students build strong grammar and vocabulary. Additionally, students will be introduced to various writing genres including expository, descriptive, persuasive, and narrative. The IEW stylistic guidelines will be taught to enhance the richness of student writings and several IEW writing techniques will be taught including KeyWord outlines and Story Sequence Charts. Students will be assigned 4 to 5 literature books to read for the year and 4 end-of-quarter assignments. Students will also complete a grade-level research paper during the 4th quarter.
Weekly Homework Expectations: Students will be assigned exercises in the Shurley Grammar workbook to review grammar skills introduced in class. Students will complete periodic at-home, parent-graded Shurley Grammar tests, located in the workbook, to evaluate their grammar competency. Students will be assigned multiple three to five MLA formatted paragraph writing assignments during the program year focusing on various writing skills and genres. Families should plan to spend 2 to 4 hours a week completing English assignments.
Parent-Teacher Expectations: Parents are expected to serve as editors to all student writing work. Prior to signing up, it is understood that parent-teachers have thoroughly vetted the literature books to your home/lifestyle choices and beliefs. Parent teachers are also responsible for grading any grammar tests and submitting grades to Google Classroom before the due date.
