SUMMER CAMP: Shadow Puppets

This camp offers a fun, hands-on experience focusing on the art of shadow puppetry. Participants will learn the history and techniques of constructing shadow puppets using simple materials, as well as making small screens, background sceneries, and props. The camp will emphasize creative production, including developing dialogue, movement, and music with theatrical instruments.

The final stage involves creating and filming short performances. These films will be edited and possibly shared on YouTube. The camp experience also includes theatre games and movement exercises to enhance learning and creativity.

WHEN: July 6-10, 10-13 year olds

Camp runs M-F from 10:00am to 3:00pm. Campers may be dropped off after 9:30am in the morning and picked up before 3:30pm. Staff will remain on site throughout drop-offs and pick-ups. Snacks are provided, but please send your camper with a cold lunch. Lunch is between 12-1 on site.

About the Instructor 

Sean powers has been teaching and performing shadow puppets since 1996 self taught , his influences were the captivating artistry of the Indonesian puppetry in Bali and Java along with the shadow puppet work coming from china, shadow puppets are found all over the world in different forms but all have a common thread. The art is performed live and most times in a ceremonial manner using traditional open lamp

Flames or the lightbulb, Sean has performed over 1300 shows in his career, his main venues found in California and Oregon , libraries , schools , science halls , summer camps, private events and festivals have been his outlet. Sean uses simple materials mostly inexpensive and recycled in creating whimsical ,informative and engaging format depicting folk-tales from around the world and even stories he’s created himself, with the upmost respect of the cultures and stories recreated with shadow puppets.Shadow puppets have a long history and Sean’s mission is to extend this history into our future. Sean grew up in Sacramento in a large artistic family but now lives in Arcata California since 1989. Seansshadows.com is his website where you may view some of his works . Also on his youtube site seansshadows can be viewed in all his various film making projects with children and films he’s made over the years.

In order to create a safe and encouraging environment for creativity, we ask that all attendees comply with Verge’s non-discrimination policy which prohibits unlawful discrimination and harassment based on race, color, gender, gender identity/expression, age, physical or mental disability, religion, sex, sexual orientation, or any other consideration made unlawful by the state or local laws. We also ask that everyone contribute positively to a safe and comfortable environment for all attendees. We reserve the right to refuse entry to anyone who does not abide by our community standards stated above.

Cancellation and Refunds Policy

Verge Center for the Arts reserves the right to cancel classes, to change instructors, and to make other changes that may become necessary to ensure a quality experience for participants. In the event that a class is canceled, we will contact all registrants and offer the option of transferring to another available session, or receiving a full refund.

If a participant wishes to withdraw from a class, they must do so in writing at least seven days prior to the first class meeting to receive a full refund, less a $25 processing fee. Withdrawals occurring within seven days prior to the first class meeting will receive a refund of 50% of the total class fee or may transfer to a class of equal or lesser value. Participants are only eligible for one transfer per registration and must get it approved by Verge staff. No refunds or transfers are given to withdrawals that occur 24 hours or less before the class begins. Membership fees are non-refundable. Please note we are unable to issue cash refunds.
