Early American History: 1492-1820
This is a year-long high school history course studying the exploration, settling, and establishment of the United States of America. The division of American history into a two-year course allows for more depth of study, particularly of the founding generation, the Revolutionary War, and the early Republic. With the 250th Anniversary of the Declaration of Independence being celebrated this year, this would be a great option for high school students who haven’t yet studied this period of American history or who want deeper look at this period of history.
The main text for this class will be Wilfred McClay’s Land of Hope. Dr. McClay’s writing is rich and compelling. Students will also be assigned the supplemental books 1776 by David McCullough and Richard Brookhiser’s, Founding Father: Rediscovering George Washington. Assignments for this class will include weekly reading, written narrations, and the keeping of a Book of Centuries. Class participation in narrations and discussions is also expected. There will be two in-class exams at the end of each semester and occasional quizzes. Students should expect to have 45-60 minutes of daily homework for this class.
The course fee is $375. An early bird discount of $25 will be applied if registration is completed by May 31. A non-refundable $100 deposit is required in order to complete your registration. Instructions for submitting that payment will be emailed to you after you submit your registration. The balance of the course fee is due by August 13, unless a payment plan has been arranged with the teacher. This class must meet the minimum enrollment by May 31st.
Required materials:
A Book of Centuries—Several Charlotte Mason websites have information about the Book of Centuries and these can be purchased easily or created from scratch. My preferred version is published by Cottage Press and is sold at Amazon, Christian Book, and Rainbow Resource.
A notebook with loose-leaf paper to hand in written work as assigned and take notes and a binder to hold handouts.
Book list:
Land of Hope by Wilfred McClay--There is a 2nd edition due out in May, but I'll wait and see if the cost comes down before deciding if it's a good choice for this class. Otherwise we'll use the 1st edition. Please wait to purchase the text until summer.
