Trail Steward Training Day #2
This training day is geared toward new volunteer Trail Stewards. Throughout the day we will be going over the requirements of the Trail Steward position. This includes:
- blowdown removal
- drainage clearing
- sidecutting
- trail marker placement
We will meet at the Rooster Comb Trailhead at 9:00 AM on Saturday, April 25, 2026. We will start the day with a brief orientation and overview of trail maintenance concepts. Then we will proceed to hike 2.25 miles to the summit of Rooster Comb, where we will turn around and begin our trail maintenance. We will then hike the 2.25 miles back out, chopping blowdown, sidecutting, and clearing drainages along the way.
Participants should be prepared to work in the rain, bugs, cold and mud! We will be hiking a total of up to 6 miles, carrying tools with us, and working along the way.
Please bring water, lunch, snacks, a good pair of hiking boots and a backpack with at least 30-liter capacity. Tools will be provided, but volunteers are encouraged to bring their own hand tools (handsaws, loppers, hazel hoes, axes).
Lodging
For those needing a place to stay the night before and/or after, campsites at the Heart Lake Wilderness Campground will be available free of charge to volunteers.
*ADK cannot guarantee a time the project will be finished.
