Lean-to Adopter Training Day #2
This training day is geared toward new volunteer Lean-to Adopters. Throughout the day we will be going over the requirements of the Lean-to Adopter position. This includes:
- cleaning of fireplaces or fire rings
- removal of accumulated garbage and other refuse
- removal of fallen trees and woody debris (blowdown) in the lean-to site
- replacement or repair of privy doors
- privy relocation
- register maintenance
We will meet at the Copperas Pond Trailhead in the Sentinel Range Wilderness. We will start the day with a brief orientation and overview. Then we will proceed to hike 0.5 miles to the Copperas Pond lean-to, carrying a few tools as well as a replacement privy door with us. When we get to the lean-to we will discuss Lean-to Adopter duties, replace the door on a privy, and perform any necessary maintenance or clean-up. We will then hike the 0.5 miles back out.
Participants should be prepared to work in the rain, bugs, cold, and mud! We will be hiking a total of up to 6 miles, and carrying tools with us. Work we might do includes any of the aforementioned Lean-to Adopter duties, except for relocating a privy. If you are interested in learning how to relocate a privy, I'm hoping to do a privy-moving project (or two!) in the Fall. If you are interested, shoot me an email!
Please bring water, lunch, snacks, a good pair of hiking boots and a backpack with at least 30-liter capacity. Tools will be provided.
Lodging
For those needing a place to stay the night before and/or after, campsites at the Heart Lake Wilderness Campground will be available free of charge to volunteers.
*ADK cannot guarantee a time the project will be finished.
