Language Perception across Borders: A COIL Virtual Exchange Collaboration
Why are some people rewarded for speaking two languages while others are encouraged to be monolingual? Why are some languages more prestigious than others? This webinar will present the journey of two classes, one at Shenandoah University in Virginia (US) and another class at ITESO in Guadalajara (Mexico), to explore notions of linguistic inequality and cultural perceptions across the US/Mexico border. The session will bring light to the process needed to make such a collaboration successful from establishing the connections between the two institutions, to the organization and implementation of the project. Furthermore, the presentation will highlight the crucial skills students can develop and the rewards that faculty can enjoy by engaging across borders.
