Intro to Defensive Shotgun (DS 101)
Defensive Shotgun 101 (DS101)
Instructor: Guy Coursey
(Gunsite Instructor | NRA, SIG SAUER, Smith & Wesson, and Glock Certified)
The shotgun remains one of the most powerful and versatile tools for personal defense, but only in the hands of a properly trained user. Defensive Shotgun 101 (DS101) is designed to build a solid foundation in the safe, effective, and confident use of the shotgun for defensive applications.
Led by highly experienced instructor Guy Coursey, this course delivers professional-level instruction rooted in real-world application and nationally recognized training standards.
Students will begin by developing a strong understanding of firearm safety as it specifically applies to defensive shotgun use. From there, the course progresses into identification and understanding of common shotgun platforms, including pump-action and semi-automatic systems, along with their components and operation.
Throughout the class, students will learn and demonstrate:
- Proper safety application for defensive shotgun handling
- Shotgun nomenclature and platform differences
- Ammunition types and their appropriate uses
- Safe and efficient loading, unloading, and reloading techniques
- Operation of both pump-action and semi-automatic shotguns
A major focus of this course is understanding patterning and its critical role in defensive shooting. Students will learn how different loads perform and how to apply that knowledge in real-world scenarios.
Live-fire exercises will include:
- Patterning 00 buckshot at distances up to 25 yards
- Applying marksmanship fundamentals specific to shotgun use
- Zeroing slugs at 25, 35, and 50 yards for increased accuracy and accountability
By the end of DS101, students will leave with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to safely and effectively deploy a shotgun in a defensive context.
This course is ideal for both new shotgun owners and experienced shooters looking to build or refine their defensive skillset.
